Pete and Jeni completed a total remodel of the store in the Fall of 2008, which includes a redesigned pharmacy service counter with private counseling area, an expanded compounding lab, new floorplan and retail displays. The design features wide aisles and easier access to merchandise, including a totally redesigned jewelry counter. The spacious customer waiting room has plenty to keep you occupied-in additon to hot coffee and local news, there's a showcase featuring fascinating historical apothecary items dating back to the 1800's, historic photos, a relaxing massage chair and a treasure chest for children to explore. The waiting room is a gathering place that promotes the friendly , hometown atmosphere that Bitterroot Drug is known for.
No store with a history like that of Bitterroot Drug could thrive without the commitment of the dedicated staff of professional pharmacists, pharmacy interns and part-time employees. Pharmacists Greg Dowling, Katie Huls and Pete Seifert provide expert advice, personal care and quality pharmacy services, assisted by Pharmacy Technicians Julie Houser and Corry Wallis. Our retail staff includes Verna Schwend, Diana Koerner, Janet Kirchner, Sherry Tennant, Cherrie Lambert, Beth Matteson and Ruth McCabe. Pete and Jeni Siefert are grateful to have such a loyal and dedicated staff.
History
While planning the town of Hamilton, copper baron Marcus Daly instructed his attorney to provide a drug store for the town. Charles Crutchfield recruited pharmacist M.M. Cone, the first licensed women pharmacist in Montana, to manage the establishment. Originally located at Second and Main, the store's early location prompted the popular name, The Corner Drug Store.
In 1900, the store was purchased by George McGrath, a popular young Canadian doctor who provided medical care to Daly's Hamilton employees. It was McGrath who moved the store to its present location "in the middle on Main" in 1909. McGrath operated the store for thirty years before selling it to Ben Ogg, who had managed the store since 1916. Mr.Ogg owned and operated Bitterroot Drug until his death in 1939.
Fourth owners Bob and Kay Hall brought the store into modern era, undertaking a complete remodel in 1956. Their goal was to serve the public better, faster, more economically and with greater ease. The Halls owned the store for thirty years.
Wayne and Helen Hedman purchased the store in August, 1969. Keeping the tradition they remodeled the store to fit the times, including a storefront update in 1981. The Hedmans' goal was to continue the store's traditon of friendly hometown service, while adding a modern selection of cards, stationery, jewelry, candy, fragrances and veterinary supplies. The Hedmans passed the torch of ownership to Pete and Jeni Seifert in 2006.
